Des Arts Decoratifs - Paris Exposition Internationale 1925_At inception a luxury style encompassing fine and decorative arts, architecture and a way of life. Luxury materials and customized artisan construction for an elite wanting original and different design and who embraced modernity and the fulfillment of the partly Hollywood conceived streamlined machine age lifestyle.
Mass production and popular uptake of the style from the late 1930's caused dilution .
This eclectic style itself influenced consequent styles and from the 1960's was called - Art Deco- in recognition.
'The Ballets Russes' formed by Russian emigres to Paris were a formative influence in the 1920's, along with the conjunction of early 20th century new european art movements - Cubists in Paris, Fauvists in Italy, Constructivists in Russia.
Mayan, Egyptology, Japanese, Chinese, Eastern and primitive influences also effected various Art Deco product.
At it's inception the ideal patron of the new style'art moderne' was perceived as very wealthy, individualistic, sophisticated, fashionable, fun, active, impulsive, enthusiastic for new experience, well travelled and willing to indulge the artists total creative freedom unquestioningly.
The perception being that those wealthy and daring enough to live the implied modern life expressed by the style, didnt mind popular disdain of their houses as monstrosities and actually enjoyed the attention and loathing of the public which they were able to achieve at the beginning when the style made a startling impact worldwide.
